Tried and Tested

Ever happy to test out a new fake tan product, I’m willing to give anything a go, cheap or expensive. In all honesty and being realistic about what to expect, I’ve been pretty happy with nearly every product I’ve tried, with the exception of one rather pricey piece that I found impossible to apply evenly.

I added the Tantruth self-tan gel to my list of tried and tested to see if it had anything that made it stand head and shoulders above its counterparts. The answer is ‘yes’… and ‘no’.

Application-wise, this has to be one of the easiest, but getting the correct depth of colour takes a little practice. My legs are currently a little orange because I wanted to see the difference one extra small blob of gel would make. I guess the good news is this proves a little really does go a long way. All in all a great and affordable product.

Fake tanning is a chore most of us can do without during the winter. We just pile on jumpers, tights and trousers and tell ourselves that pale is beautiful. But as spring comes, it’s time to show more flesh and that’s when it pays to have golden skin – after all, no one wants to look at pasty legs. With this in mind and a couple of events to go to, I was in dire need of some colour. After work on a Thursday, I popped into Ab Fab at 6.30pm and found the salon was still a hive of activity. Hairdressers and beauty therapists were on hand until 9pm to pamper and preen.

I never understand salons closing at 5.30pm – surely late opening would cater for working women with money to spend? I had booked in for a manicure and a spray tan – both of which leave you feeling glamorous and ready to party. Therapist Marie performed a small miracle on my nails by making them presentable.

She used Jessica products on my bitten ends to transform them into neat, short painted nails I was proud to show off. Then I was taken downstairs to the spray tan room where my whole body got a golden glow. I have had a few spray tans in my time – always preferable to the nasty sunbed – but this was one of the best. Marie explained they use Tantruth which gives a lovely, streak-free bronze colour.

After a few minutes to dry off, I was dressed and ready to go. With spray tans the guide colour has to be washed off but you are advised to leave it on for six hours before bathing or, even better, overnight – which I did. I awoke to find my sheets survived the tan unstained (unheard of) and, after a shower, I looked as though I had spent two weeks in the Caribbean. My friends commented on how natural my colour was, too. The perfect pick-me-up after a long, wrapped-up winter.

Charity Day

Canterbury College held the first of many "Bronze for your Brass" Spray Tan Charity Days in conjunction with Tantruth and Beauty Express and raised a whopping £200.50 for this Skin Cancer Appeal. The day itself ran like clockwork, mostly due to the preparation of the day by the college tutors and students. Every student had their own area of the salon to look after, whether meeting and greeting clients or being actively involved in the treatment itself. Second year Beauty students from the BETC National Diploma and Beauty students from NVQ Level 3 ran the day, along with Course Tutor Paula Deketh. Paula trained the students prior to the day on the use of the machine and products and promoted the Charity Day to all college staff with e-mails, posters, and the Beauty students handed out flyers about the event.

Wendy McCreadie, Beauty Technician who organised the event commented, "We had a very positive response from regular and new clients who were all happy to partake especially as it was for charity. There were lots of interest in the spray tan and we were asked if we would make it a regular feature." She continued, "The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves, both those that were tanning and those being tanned. The Tantruth products were a great success, they gave a good all round natural tan, dried easily and there was no over powering smell. At the end of the day everyone was thrilled to find out we had made £200.50 for the charity.
